An unusual and elaborately carved polychrome wooden mask, reportedly originating from Alaska and traditionally dated to circa 1900, exhibiting stylistic characteristics associated with the Yup’ik ceremonial mask-making tradition.
The mask features a striking composition combining anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, and avian elements. Its expressive central face displays a prominent stylized eye, an elongated snout, and an open mouth with individually carved teeth. Extending from the central form are sculptural wooden appendages, including winglike projections, paddle-shaped elements, and suspended ornaments, complemented by natural feathers.
The carved wooden surface retains a muted polychrome palette of ochre, reddish brown, black, and pale green, with geometric markings and linear decorative accents. The asymmetrical arrangement and projecting elements create a dynamic sculptural composition characteristic of the visual language associated with Alaskan Indigenous ceremonial art.
The reverse reveals a hollowed wooden construction with visible carving marks and later mounting hardware.
