The red field displays am allover pattern of fringed palmettes, double “eye†motives, radically bent leaves and assorted other semi-geometric elements ultimately of vegetal origin. The design starts out in sync, but it rapidly devolves into attractive chaos. Although from the end of the 19th century, this higher “Serapi†grade NW Persian carpet has something of the 18th century in the Caucasus. Dark blue reversing turtle strip style border. Moderate weave on cotton. Natural dyes. Good condition.
